Ethical Decision making -healthcare professionals ONLY please -no opinions?

When is it ok to lie to a patiant regarding their health status. What are the laws? Can the parents of a 16y/o HIV positive girl refuse to allow healthcare professionals to tell her of her condition? The first provision of the American Nurses Association (ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses includes the following in its interpretation: Patients have the moral right to be given accurate, complete, and understandable information in a manner that facilitates an informed judgment; understandable information in a manner that facilitates an informed judgment; to accept, refuse, or terminate treatment without deceit (p. 151).

first off, wether you like it or not you cant control the actions of a 16 y/o especially regarding sex... if the pt is not informed of her condition than they will most likely continue what they were doing, thus spreading the disease and causing more harm. there is no protection in ignorance. as an er medic ive had to inform many pt's of things that would change thier life forever, but information gives us the power to better our lives and help others. besides what are you going to tell her when shes taking 20 pills a day and feels sick all the time. also if the parent dosnt tell her someone else will, then youll have another problem on your hands, resentment. this is something that will be with her for the rest of her life and the sooner she learns to deal with it the better off shell be.

Only if she states she doesn't want to know the results of her Elisa test. If she asks and wants to know, she should!

Well, it is perfectly understandable that parents don't want her to suffer, or worry and want her to live a complete life in spite of HIV. But she can have it! She needs support.
