What are the following drugs used for? kivexa. valcyte. reyataz. daraprim. norvir.?

i am taking these tablets for treatment of hiv and would like some information about them.

Lamivudine (Kivexa-brand name) is used in combination with other medications to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Lamivudine is not a cure and may not decrease the number of HIV-related illnesses. Lamivudine does not prevent the spread of HIV to other people. Lamivudine (Epivir-HBV) is used to treat hepatitis B infection. Lamivudine is in a class of medications called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors. It works by stopping the spread of the HIV and hepatitis B viruses.
Valganciclovir (generic name) Valcyte (brand name)is used to treat cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis (eye infection that can cause blindness) in people who have acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Valganciclovir is also used to prevent cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease in people who have received a heart, kidney, or kidney-pancreas transplant and who have a chance of getting CMV disease. Valganciclovir is in a class of medications called antivirals. It works by preventing the spread of CMV disease or slowing the growth of CMV.
Atazanavir (Reyataz-brand name)is used in combination with other medications to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in patients with or without acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Atazanavir is in a class of medications called HIV protease inhibitors. It works by preventing the spread of HIV in the body. Atazanavir does not cure HIV and may not prevent you from developing HIV related illnesses. Atazanavir does not prevent the spread of HIV to other people.
Pyrimethamine (Daraprim庐) is a medication used for protozoal infections. It is commonly used as an antimalarial drug (for both treatment and prevention), and is also used in the treatment of Toxoplasma gondii infections in immunocompromised patients, such as HIV-positive individuals.
Ritonavir (Norvir-brand name) is used to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. It belongs to a class of drugs called protease (pro' tee ace) inhibitors, which slow the spread of HIV infection in the body. It is usually taken with other antiviral medications. Ritonavir is not a cure and may not decrease the number of HIV-related illnesses. Ritonavir does not prevent the spread of HIV to other people.

Kivexa contains Abacavir, Valcyte contains Valgancyclovir, Reyataz contains Atazanavir, Norvir contains Ritonavir. They are all anti-viral medications prescribed either to fight against or to prevent a viral infection. Since you are a HIV patient, probably it has been prescribed to you to fight against CMV (Cyto Megal Virus) Infection.
Daraprim contains Pyrimethamine. It is prescribed to fight against pneumocystis carinii pneumonia.

Hi there,

Kivexa, norvir and reyataz are your anti-hiv medications. Combinations are made up of at least 2 drug classes; the classes are as follows: PI (Protease Inhibitor), NNRTI (Non-Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors) and NRTI (Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors). Kivexa (more commonly known as Epzicom in the US) combines abacavir (Ziagen) and lamivudine (Epivir or 3TC) and is part of the NRTI class. The rest of your combination, Reyataz (atazanavir) is in the PI drug class. Your combination is fine; depending on past drug combination history some people may boost the atazanavir with Norvir (ritonavir).

Valcyte is a medication used to fight Cytomegalovirus (CMV); daraprim is used to combat Toxoplasmosis.

Cheers.
