Pregnancy and Med School Please HELP?

Well, I have been accepted into medical school this coming fall and it is a dream come true. I worked so hard for 4 years to get to this point and it's finally happending. I have one MAJOR problem, though. I screwed up BIG time and I'm pretty sure I am pregnant. I do not know for sure yet, but I have the symptoms and it's just a strong gut feeling. I need some advice on what to do about this because I obviously cannot attend med school with a newborn. I never thought I belived in abortion until I found my self in this situation. I do not know what I believe anymore. I plan on specializing in HIV treatment and other immune deficiencies. I know I can save many lives, and this opportunity is just too big of a chance for me to blow by having this baby. I know I'm the one to decide this but I need some opinions on what to do..! PLEASE HELP

so you've gotten a really good answer about abortion/adoption/keeping the baby etc. i would like to add that is is possible to go to med school w/ a newborn if you have a great support system. yes, it would be extremely difficult but it's possible.

mommd.com is a site dedicated to mothers who are physicians. you'll find some of them had kids while in med school (generally around 3rd or 4th year tho because these are generally the easiest years in med school). thought this might be supportive if you decided to become a mother and enter med school at the same time.

best of wishes

(Warning: explicit comments about pregnancy).

There are no "the symptoms" in very early pregnancy. You presumably haven't missed a period yet. The most common pregnancy symptoms at that time would be none at all, and the most likely cause of many of the very early pregnancy symptoms is stress.

But if you are pregnant, assuming it's too late for the morning after pill, you have three choices.

1) Abortion. Sooner rather than later if you are going to do it. You will encounter people telling you that abortion is evil, not just now, but for the rest of your life, even if they don't know you had one. Be sure you can live with yourself for doing it. You might like to ask your doctor how "developed" the fetus is at this point. After all, we discard a potential baby every month when we have a period.
2) Adoption. Only you can know how you think you will react to carrying the child for nine months and then giving it up. And you will be giving it up at a time when your hormones are all over the place and instinct is screaming at you to keep it.
3) Keep the child. Unless you have another adult who is pretty much prepared to take over raising the child for you, you're right, this is incompatible with med school.

First things first, though - go see your doctor and get it confirmed. If you're going for option 2 or 3 it's important that you start taking folic acid ASAP, at the very least.
