Hiv?????????

I'm doing research on this. I just need to know what treatment is like for a child born with this condition, who is at like 5 years old. Curable? Obvious that they're infected? Normal life? Do they need to go in for medical treatments periodically? And how about for a young adult (22)? Thanks!

It depends..
have both persons been tested for HIV? As you might know there is not a way to clear HIV off an infected person, hence is not curable, but it can be managed.
If the mother has HIV it is likely that her child will have it, unless special measures are taken during birth.

Being infected is not the same as being ill. They are only infected and must keep their infection under control daily using drugs called anti-retro-virals. This way, they will delay the onset of the proper illness (AIDS) of many many years.
They must be checked regularly to see whether the number of viruses in their blood is growing (not a good thing) and whether their immune system is working properly.
They can lead a good life, provided they are very scrupulous on treatment and check-ups.
The young woman should be very careful, HIV passes to people through sex. She can be sexually active but must use condoms. Other methods don't work. Should she pass HIV to someone knowing she has it, she might be criminally liable. Partners must be always informed.

It's dangerous to assume that a newborn is HIV positive. With education and preventative health care, the number of HIV positive newborns in the United States has declined from a high of 1,760 in 1991 to as few as 280 in 2000 (even with known HIV+ mothers), the CDC reports.

Is HIV curable? No there is no cure for HIV, no matter what the age of the patient.

Would it be obvious that a 5 year old is positive? Probably not, depends on the health care regime that they are on. The only way to know for sure is with an HIV test.

Can a positive child lead a normal life? Possibly! However, that child's "normal" life will need to include remembering to take medicines once or twice a day. HIV research is slightly over 20 years old and based on that research and medicine; people are living with HIV longer and will likely die of natural causes.

Medical treatments? Well, just like anyone else, an HIV person would go to the doctor when there's a reason to go. There are annual followup tests that are recommended or might need to see the doc to get your prescription renewed. Three to four doctor visits a year is probably average. Just need to take the meds on schedule daily, live a clean and healthy life and get regular sleep.

The same would apply for a 22 year old.
