With all generally-available treatments, what's the average lifespan after contracting HIV?

I saw a headline on Yahoo! today ("Many people don't think AIDS is fatal: survey") and thought of a sibling of a friend of mine. The sibling was diagnosed with HIV a few years ago and didn't take treatments regularly for a while due to drug addiction. I believe he has been taking all available treatments for the past year.

After seeing the headline and thinking of my friend's brother, I started wondering what the average lifespan was after contracting the virus.

Thanks.

With the current treatment, people with HIV can live as long as other people. However, this depends on a number of factors. The treatment needs to be taken very consistently and even missing a pill here or there can lead to resistance, which may lead to treatment troubles down the road and, in theory, shorten a person's lifespan.

In addition, the HIV needs to be detected early and treatment initiated before the onset of AIDS-related symptoms. Once the immune system has been severely depleted, it can be difficult to restore it entirely.

Further, many people with HIV have other conditions or infections (such as hepatitis C or TB) that lead to complications and more serious disease.

I read about several people that have had HIV for well over 10 years and they are doing fine. In the same article they talk about people that get it and then die only months later. At this point, I don't know what to think.

I hope it's as long as possible.
