Why should non-profits support or finance HIV/AIDS research treatments?

Why should non-profits support or finance HIV/AIDS research treatments?

Because HIV is an epidemic that knows no age, race, sexual preference, lifestyle, social status, economic status... the list goes on. So does the death rate and infection rate.

Because people, not the gov, fund them so we can live in a healthier, safer world. I hope you wouldn't want to let such a debilitating disease go around without any control or treatments. Without treatments, people with long-term illnesses such as HIV/AIDS would be more of a drain on society as all of their needs would have to be met by some gov't program or let them die in the streets because they wouldn't be able to support themselves since they would be too sick. (same goes for all other illnesses, not just HIV/AIDS)

why shouldn't non-profits support ALL diseases that kill?
if they did, we probably would have cures for most of them by now.

HIV verses HCV?
There are far more HCV infected people than there are HIV!
The difference?

HIV-causes many bi-directional diseases leading to death.
HCV-causes many bi-directional diseasdes leading to death

HIV-can be maintaned for decades with medication-quality of life can be bad. Therapy medications are expensive.
HCV-can be sustained with medication in all genotypes, however, it doesn't work well for 1a,1b's. Not everyone who does antiviral chemotherapy will have an SVR. Medications cost for one 48 week course $90 k +.

So, the question should be that all non-profits should donate to diseases that lower the quality of life and that can end in death.

HIV, HCV and many other diseases ALL need funding.
EQUALIZE!
