Future treatment for diseases, such as HIV involves? Bio question...?

A ) removal of receptor protiens from the cell membrane
B) blocking regognition proteins of the HIV virus
C) blocking receptor proteins in the cell membrane
D) adding recognition proteins to the cell membrane

ok ppl i just dont understand my question i just need to know if it is abcd and explain why that is the answer its for Bio 20 thanx

Here's the scoop. A virus start on the outside of a cell. It needs to get in. So it attaches to a specific receptor site on the cell, and sneaks in that way.

Now, it's not like those cells put receptor sites out there just for the HIV. They're needed to do normal cell stuff. So that means that option (a) is out. We can't just take away the receptors... that will harm the cells.

That also makes option (c) a bad idea too. Blocking the receptor isn't as permanent as removing them, but it makes it much harder to do their job.

Adding new proteins to the cell isn't going to change a thing... unless, perhaps, it's to an immune cell acting against it instead of a target cell for the virus. For consistancy, I'll assume we're always talking about the same cell. Otherwise (d) is a plausible answer.

That leaves us only with (b). If we can't block the cell, we'll have to block the virus. It looks like right now the virus evades detection because IT is protecting its sites too... if we can stop that protection from going away or erode the protection then it will either not be able to bind at all or be vulnerable to immune attack.

Link below for a short article talking about this very issue.

There are many diseases for which cure eludes us at the present time. However, research progresses to find such cures. With HIV, for example, the main research is directed towards the development of a vaccine to prevent its development in children and adults, much like the Measles/Mumps/Chickenpox vaccines that are commonplace today.

Viral markers not only in the cell but also in the cell membrane are being researched so as to find out which structure, if any, responds to manipulation in a way that would cause cure if administered.

The answers are probably 5-10 years away. Once a possible medication or vaccine is developed, it is subjected to three phases of clinical trials to prove its worth, which could very well take another 5 years.

Research goes on for Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, cancer and myriad other illnesses for which there are no known cures at present.
