What level of sucess has been reached so far on hiv/aids drug and treatment?

Drug treatment has been very successful to this point. New drugs and drug combinations are extending the life expectancy of HIV patients. However, there are some strains that are resistant to current medications. If the current research does not produce a new type of treatment, the life expectancy of those infected will plummet.
