Hiv treatment. i just found out my cousin has hiv. she gets shots 3 times a week. i thought there was a pill

to take. what type of treatment is this? can her life be prologned with this treatment? are there any other treatments out there?

It is most likely one of the immune based therapies. There are currently 5 available. They are experimental and therefore have not yet been approved by the FDA

Immunitin (HE2000, alpha-epibromide)
Proleukin (aldesleukin, Interleukin-2, IL-2)
Remune (HIV-1 Immunogen, Salk vaccine)
BAY 50-4798
IR103

Your cousin should consult an HIV/AIDS specialist. The drugs mentioned above are usually reserved for patients who have presented to be resistant to other drug treatments.

The shots could be various things:
Experimental or new antiviral medicines
Treatment for an HIV-associated infection
Treatment for a symptom of HIV

She may be taking the pills too.

When people are newly diagnosed with HIV they may not necessarily start on pills right away. It is up to the patient and the doctor to figure this out. The only thing I would suggest is that he doctor is a HIV specialist, who had experience in the field of HIV meds.

It's hard to tell what your cousin in taking.

It could be an experimental treatment... There are drugs that are being tested that are meant to boost the immune system that are injectable.

If she has other health problems related to HIV (one example might be a co-infection) she may need IV drugs for that.
