what type of virus contains reverse transcriptase, and what type of nucleic acid does this virus type also contain? The nucleic acid in these types of viruses (retroviruses) is RNA. The reverse transcriptase is used to make a DNA copy of the RNA in the virus. The DNA copy is then replicated by the host cell. Then the copies of DNA are transcribed into RNA which is put into new viral particles which then go on to infect another cell. During the infection, one of the virus's genes codes for reverse transcriptase and this is made by the cell and then the enzyme is then put into the virion (viral particle) along with the RNA genome. Well, the answer to the type of virus would be a retrovirus & HIV would be a specific example.
