How does someone receive the HIV virus from a blood transfusion?

Isnt donor blood checked before given to someone in need of it? What are the statistics?

obviously the mechanism of transmission is that the infective agent for HIV/AIDS is in the blood the recipient gets. testing for the infective agent is not 100% effective, although it is about 99% effective-which does nothing to help those infected by this route...so do we give blood for the fun of it?? No, patients only receive blood if their lives depend upon it....so, if your physician says you need blood, take it, you have the odds on your side...good luck.

if the blood is less then 60 days old theres a chance that the HIV virus didnt show up yet and the person has just got the virus. i'm not sure on how long they keep blood before they use it so i dont know the statistics but (a) if you got a blood transfusion with blood that is less then (b) 60 days old you would take the # of people that are reporting HIV virus in one day and take the chance of you getting blood thats less then then you take a-b=answer

Before 1985 donor blood was not checked for HIV, So before then it was easy to get HIV from a blood transfusion. Nowdays it is unlikely, but not impossible to get HIV from a transfusion If the clinic is sure to check all blood that comes in then there is less of a possibility to get it I would say 99.9% unlikely to get HIV from a transfusion today vs 1985 being 50% chance

yes donor blood is checked and checked and checked before given. this rarely ever happens i dont know the exact stats but i have never heard of this happening since the 80's.

Under ideal situations all blood transfusions should be thoroughly screened for all kinds of diseases but sometimes things get though

Bleach. You can mix it half and half with water and you'll be safe. I'd leave it for a minute or so. And yes, it does kill the HIV/AIDS virus.
