Can hepatitis C mutate into the HIV virus? |
I have a relative that has Hepatitis C. My mother asked her doctor about the virus, and her doctor told her that Hepatitis C could mutate into the HIV virus. To me this didnt sound very accurate, but as I am not educated on Hepatitis C and hold no medical degree, I just simply dont know for sure, but I am very curious. I did google my query, but I didnt find anything linking the two together. Please if any one can give me an informed answer, I would appreciate it. Again, I want only serious answers to this question, if you DO NOT know the answer, please DO NOT bother to respond to this question. It is not possible for the Hep C virus to mutate into the HIV virus. Many diseases can lead to others but I have never heard of Hep C turning into HIV. HIV is caused by a specific virus that attacks the immune system. Hep C is only damaging to the liver. I have done a lot of research on HIV/ AIDS and have never seen anything about Hep C causing HIV. People that have Hep C through unsafe transmission (unprotected sex, needles, etc.) are at a higher risk of contracting HIV but that's about as far as it goes... NO WAY !! Hep C and HIV are two completely different viruses, but the method of transmission for both of these are similar. Many doctors and health departments recommend testing for HIV, too, since the risk factor for that is similar to the risk factors for Hep C. As for Hep C (HCV) mutating into HIV, that is completely inaccurate. I'm not totally surprised, though, because many primary care physicians are not educated about HCV. It's too bad because primary care doctors are the first ones who may be able to identify HCV if they are alerted to the risk factors and symptoms. But I digress.... no, HCV will not mutate into HIV or any other disease, however, because of the damage HCV causes to the liver, it may lead to end stage liver disease and/or hepato cellular carcinoma (called HCC or liver cancer). I hope this clarifies things for you. Best wishes. |
