Can the human immune system kill a single HIV virus?

When I've learned about the Human Immunodeficiency Virus over the years, I'm told that once acquired, there's nothing the body can do about it, and it's just a manner of time before it shuts down the body's immune system.

What I was never quite clear on, however, was if the human immune system is able to kill ANY of the viruses. In other words, does the body attack and kill at least a few of the HIVs, or can it not identify, attack, and kill even a single HIV, so that even if theoretically just a single HIV entered the human body (theoretically since probably thousands or millions enter at once), the virus would be free to attack and multiply with impunity?

(Bonus question: how do you deal with HIV grammatically? Can you say "HIV virus", or is that redundant? Also, what do you do if its plural; say "HIVs"?)
(P.S. I'm just curious. I most certainly do not have HIV)

I guess it depends on the immune system. If it is comprimised then maybe a single HIV can multiply. I think that a healthy person COULD POSSIBLY overcome one single virus, but I don't know. I think you're right about them going in by the thousands or millions thus overcoming the healthy immune system.

I hear people say "HIV virus" all the time or the "virus that causes HIV". I think it is redundant but maybe people don't know what HIV stands for?

I'm glad you don't have HIV. I don't either but I have a friend who does and she has been healthy for almost 11 years ;)
