Factor VIII ("factor eight" not "factor aid" or "factored") is one of the proteins made by the clotting system of the blood. It is missing in a genetic disease called haemophillia A. Sufferers of haemophillia A get uncontrolled and painful bruising and bleeding from minor injuries.
The treatment is Factor VIII. In the past, this was derived from blood donations. The Bayer pharmaceutical company was instrumental in the development and marketing of this treatment, as were three other companies. Prior to the mid 1980s, blood donations were not screened for infections such as HIV and hepatitis C, and these could be passed on through the use of blood products such as full blood transfusions and transfusions of components such as Factor VIII.
A number of legal suits have been filed against blood banks and pharmaceutical companies using blood products alleging that they did not institute screening of donors promptly enough once knowledge of the risks of HIV transmission were known. While there have been some high profile judgements against blood banks, as far as I am aware there have been none suggesting that Bayer has been negligent.
The Factor VIII currently produced by Bayer does not come from blood donors. It is produced through genetic recombinant technology, as are a number of other therapeutic products such as human insulin and hepatitis B vaccinations.
The risk of HIV from blood donor derived factor VIII is minimal provided donations are properly screened for HIV, as they have been since 1985 in most countries. There is NO RISK of HIV at all from factor VIII produced by recombinant technology: it is even safer.
