What are the chances that my cat has FIV (feline HIV) or feline leukemia? |
I just adopted a cat who used to be a stray, although she has lived indoors in a home for the past year. Before that, she lived with two outdoor cats. She seems healthy and eats well, etc. The vet checked her over on Friday and said he thinks she's fine. He's only ordering bloodwork because he said he wants to be on the safe side to protect my two current indoor cats and because of the new cat's questionable past. I'm taking her for the bloodwork tonight, but just wondering if anyone out there knows about the diseases and whether they think I'm worrying for nothing!! Signed, Worried Mom :-) I adopted a cat from the SPCA of Dallas, and I got my cat home and he was real lethargic and sick with an upper-respritory infection, within 3 days of having him he was dead of fiv, the Spca refuses to test their animal before they adopt them out..fiv is a serious thing and it is heartbreaking..spreading it to other cats usually come from them getting into fights and scratching each other..But I think you have nothing to worry about..I mean it is common, just stay positive...AND NEVER ADOPT CATS FROM THE SPCA.... personally i wouldnt have her tested! The vet won't give a leukemia or fiv shot to a cat that tests positive. If your other cats are vaccinated, they should be fine |
