A PROCLAMATION

Forty years ago, patrons and supporters of the Stonewall Inn in New York City resisted police harassment that had become all too common for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. Out of this resistance, the LGBT rights movement in America was born. During LGBT Pride Month, we commemorate the events of June 1969 and commit to achieving equal justice under law for LGBT Americans.

LGBT Americans have made, and continue to make, great and lasting contributions that continue to strengthen the fabric of American society. There are many well-respected LGBT leaders in all professional fields, including the arts and business communities. LGBT Americans also mobilized the Nation to respond to the domestic HIV/AIDS epidemic and have played a vital role in broadening this country's response to the HIV pandemic.

Due in no small part to the determination and dedication of the LGBT rights movement, more LGBT Americans are living their lives openly today than ever before. I am proud to be the first President to appoint openly LGBT candidates to Senate-confirmed positions in the first 100 days of an Administration. These individuals embody the best qualities we seek in public servants, and across my Administration -- in both the White House and the Federal agencies -- openly LGBT employees are doing their jobs with distinction and professionalism.

The LGBT rights movement has achieved great progress, but there is more work to be done. LGBT youth should feel safe to learn without the fear of harassment, and LGBT families and seniors should be allowed to live their lives with dignity and respect.

The "gay rights" movement is starting to put some pressure on him according to an article Yahoo! ran earlier tonight.

He'll just fly a rainbow flag above the White House for a day or two and call it good.

We are running out of months and the next step will be to change the number of months from 12 to at least 14 (just to make sure that illegal immigrants will get their Pride Month and 9/11 conspiracy loons are not left without their month... )
Oh, wait, what about David Letterman month, Reverend Write month and Acorn month? Make it 17 months in a year. Or better 38 months, just in case...

Oh good a month for everyone to flaunt and rant about their abnormal behavior! Is this an attempt by the white house to consolidate their bitching? Now instead of ranting and raving all months of the year they have one month specifically designed for them to hold their parades and whine all they want!

Good Lord!! Just cements the Jihadists mentality that we are infidels. Did you know that there are no Gays in Iran. They execute them there.
I think the heterosexual white male needs a "Month" or a "Parade". I'm pretty sure they are proud of their accomplishments, but that sector of our society has the least protections.

Well it's about time. Also it will be great to also have this here in Canada.

Even better, why not having an INTERNATIONAL LGBT Pride Month. Let the entire planet celebrate, not just the US.

Yep, it's true. Good for America. June 28th is Gay Pride Day, so that's the reasoning for the month of June.

probably....we just had gay pride week at Disney here in Florida...150,000 gays came. I would never take my family there during that week.

Oh my...they gave a month the black people, now a month to gay people (nothing to women yet)...that means that straight white males only have ten months dedicated to them...the horror.

They always have a gay pride day. Is it always in June, Im not sure nor do I care. Does Obama support such a day, I am sure he does. Who cares, blacks, whites, hispanics, heteros, celebrate every day yet the divorce rate for all of the listed is at 52% and that is just for the ones that can afford to file. I have bigger things to worry about then gays, like the invasion of illegal immigrants and how they affect my taxes!!

Yes, this is true. Although June was already unofficially LGBT Pride month, President Obama has officially recognized it as such. It's not really going to change anything though, unfortunately.

Cotton - Yes, it is common knowledge gays are killed in Iran, which is a terrible shame. White straight men don't need a month because they are not discriminated against on a large scale. Gays are discriminated against, have hate crimes committed against them and are treated unequally to their heterosexual counterpart. Although the gay pride parade has gone away from this mentality, that is the purpose of the parade... to bring awareness to the struggle, because yes there is a struggle. Its not about being gay, its about being treated unequally and to commemorate the Stonewall riots in new york that occurred in june.
