Is it illegal for the person I'm living with to tell me if our other roommate has HIV?

I ask this because when we moved in I didn't know and we share a bathroom. I know that sounds ignorant but It still makes me uncomfortable. My roommate told me finally and when I confronted the guy whose house it is he said that he wasn't legally permitted to. That just doesn't sound right to me.

Whether it was legal or not, I support his decision.

It was not his secret to tell. It was the responsiblity (if there was a responsibility) of the person who has HIV to tell. I, personally, consider it unethical to go blabbing about other people's medical conditions unless the person is putting people in danger.

And as long as you weren't sleeping with the guy, or sharing needles, or some such, you aren't in danger.

I would suggest that you read up about HIV and how it is spread. It should put your mind at ease that you don't have anything to worry about.

Well it depends on privacy and other things, so he may well be right. As long a s basic precautions are stuck to, like not sharing needles having sex without condoms, using toothbrush you are perfectly safe. Also any fluid spills like blood should always be cleaned up using gloves. ALso each person should always be responsible for cleaning of laundry. However all these precautions you would do anyway. You can no get HIV from the toilet. Also legally the other person may well not have been allowed to tell you, depends on the situation.

if you are not engaged in sexual activity with this person , the roommate, then yes it is illegal for the roommate to tell you the other person is HIV+.
If you are so worried about it, why not ask the person straight out instead of asking someone who is not the person in question. what have you got to lose?

Depends on the state, I know there is protection in certain states that prevent discrimination in schools and the work place. As for friend to friend living in the same house...I don't think so.
