Okay, I live in Salt Lake City, UT...I had unprotected sex once and I'm scared to death that I might have HIV.

Can anyone tell me if I'm being paranoid or I'm really at risk? Please Help

It's unlikely that you have contracted HIV but not impossible, since unprotected sex is the most common way HIV is passed on.
For your own peace of mind, go to your doctor and get a blood test done. And take this as a wake up call and always use a condom when having sex.

Anyone can pick up any STD via unprotected sex. Get tested.

You are at risk. Go see a doctor and get tested. That way you can find out the results, and move forward from there. If the results are negative, you don't have to worry anymore. If the results are positive, your doctor will help you with the solutions.

I imagine the chances are greater that you have any number of other STDs. The time to be scared to death was BEFORE you had unprotected sex. Of course, whether you contracted any communicable disease depends on whether the other person was infected, not just because you had unprotected sex. Stop fretting and go get yourself tested.

2/3rds of men in the US get HIV through gay sex. You have placed yourself in a very risky position. Get tested often and abstain for up to 6 months untill you know you won't infect anyone else.

Depends on the type of sex.

If you had oral sex, you're pretty safe. If you had anal sex you're more at risk(be it top or bottom).

However don't let it scare you from getting tested.

If you just did it today, run by the ER and ask for PEP, post exposure prophylactics. These are pills you can take when you might've been exposed, it's the same thing nurses and doctors take if they stick themselves with a needle.

If it was a while ago, then just wait until 3 months have passed, and go in for testing(modern testing detects it at around 3 months, but it's good to also go in later). Do not let this stop you from getting tested, it's not fair to you. You need to get the testing so that you know, otherwise you will never stop freaking out.

Now also keep in mind that if someone has HIV and is medicated, it is much harder for them to pass it on because the virus is so suppressed(they'll have an undetectable viral load).

So your chances depend on a couple factors. If it just happened recently today/yesterday go to the ER and get PEP, it's the best you can do. Otherwise get tested, I know it's hard but you have to so you can calm down, because you are a little paranoid I think right now. Testing will fix the paranoia.

Also, learn from this, no sex is good enough to justify catching HIV. You may not die from it because you're in the developed world, but your quality of life WILL change if you get it. Learn from this, sex isn't worth your quality of life!

PS: I just wanted to add that you should also get checked for the other diseases. There's other stuff than HIV out there. Some, like chlamydia is treatable, so just get a full workup done to be safe and so that if you have a minor STI you can get it treated before it becomes a problem.
