How likely is it that this person has HIV?

- she looks and acts normal and healthy
- she doesnt takes any antiviral drugs (ive been living with her so i know this)
- she has a healthy 18 month child
- she said she gets checked up regularly, and that she doesnt have HIV
- she said she has only had sex with one other man

HOWEVER

- she lives in a country where 17% of people have HIV (zambia)

thanks a lot

Sounds unlikely she has HIV. Did she have a check up after she was no longer with this man? Do you definitely know for sure she has had a check up? As long as she is not having unprotected sex, being sensible and looking after her self, I would have thought she would be ok. If you are worried that you have it contact family planning or your Doctor and have your self checked, the sooner the better.

17/100

means **** all, you have more chance of catching the curable ones then HIV. however if your concerned go to your local GU clinic and get tested then you will know for sure. so long as you have had no other partners and been faithful, it will be known quicker than you think. you could also go onto the national AIDS website for more indepth info.
But to stop any tension building up in your relationship, then discuss your concerns with her, if she is decent enough she will also be understanding to your concern and discuss the issue further, you could even go to the GU clinic together

17% who knows if she's one of them...doesnt seem like it but if shes had sex with a man in that area then who know if that man had hiv? even though shes taken HIV tests, the elapsed time, after she might've had sexual intercourse btwm that time, and boom she has it, and then it says she doesnt so she should've at least checked AFTEr she did it with him, and see. probably she doesnt have HIv, but AIDs.

I have no idea what to tell you on this, it sounds like she is healthy... but, I will tell you that I went to give blood a few months ago (I live in Canada) and they would not accept my blood because my husband lived in Africa in the 70's as a child(his parents were missionairies) due to the fact that there are forms of HIV in Africa(and other places they had listed) that aren't detectable by the tests done here(thats what the nurse told me). I was really ticked because he was a child when he lived there and was to young to have contracted it by sex, and didn't have any blood tranfusions, plus we have been married 10 years and have 3 healthy kids, and had just had an HIV test done for life insurance that was clean. But those are their rules, so they turned me away.

If you are having a relationship with her, I guess the best way to know for sure it to get yourself tested. In any event, be safe!

Good luck! :)

Are you asing because you want to have sex with this woman? If so, then you have a right to be concerned because that is NOT something to gamble on. Get tested together... you know, the old fashioned way: dinner, movie, rapid HIV test, parking on lover's lane.

If you are asking because you are generally concerned... well, leave it be or she will resent you for suggesting that she is being deceiptful. If she says she has been checked then you should not argue unless it directly impacts you or places you at risk.

In the U.S. the red cross sometimes rejects blood donors out of hand who have either traveled to or lived in certain countries in Africa or if you have slept with someone from one of these countries. Once you are on the reject list (even if neither one of you has AIDS ) you are on it for good. I don't know why they would do this, unless they get people testing negative who later turn out to be positive?

Bottom line...best to be safe (condoms) or get both tested.

are you from that msn dissident action group? Aren't you guys tired of posting these silly questions?

17% chance I'd say. And I seriously doubt that she has only slept with one man - why would she get checked regularly if she has only slept with one other man? I think she fibs!

You keep asking questions about HIV and tests. Are you worried? If so get a test done, maybe take your girlfriend with you. I think HIV takes 3 months to develop though, so if it's negative, get re-tested in 3 months.

I think your absolutely rude and ignorant to assume that just because she comes from a country where 17% of the population have HIV that she might. We live in a country England where there are hundreds of people walking around with HIV and they don't even know it. So before you want to know if she has HIV just because she is from Zambia, look a little closer to home.

Get a test. Safe sex with condoms till then!

In UK you cannot give blood if you ahve been to many parts of Africa
