Because people are living a lot longer these days with hiv (Magic Johnson - 17 years and going strong) don't

you think that this generation of young kids - ages 13-25, haven't had to deal with a lot of death first hand or second hand, and I'm not just talking about gay men, and because people are living a lot longer with these std's, especially hiv, people are therefore practicing more unsafe sex. You agree?

No. I don't think the fact that you live longer makes people take risks like that. If you thought you could get cancer from sex, and give it to someone else... but live longer WITH the cancer just by taking a fist full of pills every day...would you still have sex without protection? Living with a disease that could suddenly kill you is enough to make people use caution. You could live even LONGER if you never had the disease in the first place, so if longevity is the issue...you'd want to live as long as possible, preferably without carrying around a deadly, transmittable disease. Some people just deny that it can happen to them.

I disagree. Education and knowledge about HIV/AIDS is at an all time high, and I think thats positively affecting the decisions of young people today. Comprehensive sex education is becoming more and more popular and young people are more prepared to lead safer sex lives.

personally just the risk of getting hiv or another std would discourage me from having anywhere close to frequent sex. just the fact that i could live 17 years with it doesnt encourage me because i know that it would totally prevent me from living out my life to its fullest. that would be a terrible way to live.

It's important for people to keep in mind that there are approximately 40,000 new diagnoses of HIV every year here in the U.S. alone. Yes, people are living longer with AIDS today, but it's just as tragic a disease as it was in 1981. I think you're right... HIV/AIDS isn't as discussed as it was twenty years ago, and people think its transmission is declining.

Well I read mid-90's that anyone diagnosed with HIV would not die from it based on new discoveries in meds and treatments. But I don't care to challenge that statement personally. Magic also has a tonne of cash, so thats a huge factor.

I still wouldn't risk going unprotected even if it was cured.
