How can we make lives of people living with HIV/AIDS free from stigma and discrimination?

Yahoo! Staff Notice: This is really Jackie Shroff, popular Bollywood actor, asking a question on behalf of National AIDS Control Organization.

the following steps must be immediately taken for the betterment of people living with hiv

1.curbing widespread ignorance in govt. agencies like offices, hospitals, schools, departments etc. which tend to ignore people affected with hiv and also become barriers for them in their recruitment and selection in these agencies.

2.govt. as well as ngo's must come up in spreading knowledge to curb widespread myths about the disease through newspapers, hoardings, radio and other services.

3.An exclusive relief fund should be opened for the treatment of people affected specially children, to collect money and sympathy from the people allover india and should be used effectively to improve the condition of those affected.

4. children affected with hiv should be dealt with care and should'nt be banned from school admissions.

5.health insurance policies must come up for the people affected encouraging them to stay healthy.

6.effective knowledge must be given in schools about the disease and how to deal with people affected. moreover the use of contraceptives must be encouraged and sex education should be provided among teens in schools and colleges.

7.treatment of hiv must get cheap and easily acessible to people living in the country.

8.An exclusive sum should be announced for those affected in the govt. budget.

9.an immediate rule system must come up for people affected with hiv to encourage them to report abuse against harrasement and an effective system to deal with them.

10.support groups have a big role to play in encouraging and helping people effected by hearing and solving their problems, opening clubs to encourage friendship among hiv+ and hiv- people, organising prommames to popularise new techniques to fight hiv.

11.there must be seperate programmes on television in which hiv+ people should participate to encourage others to have a healthy life by giving them tips and techniques to lead a happy life

12. the families of those affected must support and motivate them instead of ignorance.

13.lastly there is an effective part for the hiv- people to motivate and support hiv+ives

Jackie, that is a good question and also VERY IMPORTANT from public awareness and patient benefit point of view,
Education is the key answer to your question and it should be at all levels, including
1. places of education i.e., schools, colleges, universities etc.,
2. government and private organisations
3. media which should include
a) movies, cinema theatres, documentaries, short
trailers before every motion picture
b) television
c) radio
d) news papers and magazines, books, novels, essays,
short stories etc.,
e) internet, as you have raised the question and yahoo
personnel have kindly projected it over the internet.
ONLY AND ONLY THEN THIS EXCHANGE AND
SHARING OF IDEAS AND KNOWLEDGE HAS
BEEN POSSIBLE WORLD WIDE.
4. health department at all levels, doctors, nurses medical
colleges, hospitals, in patient and family education, care,
prevention; involvement of the entire health ministery and
making AIDS as one of the national health problem as is
tuberculosis, malaria etc.,
5. education at the village level of every panch, sarpanch and
panchayat, who need to have mandatory education to
keep their post and qualify for it, and responsibility to
educate the village folks
6. similar education and requirements of courses and
certification of education should be required of all public
servants including the MLAs, MPs, MLCs, ministers etc.,
and the judiciary as well as police to avoid discrimination
and mishandling of AIDS patients
7. Education to religious people and progression of
education and knowledge to the congregations

This will not only benefit and protect the patients and stop discrimination against them but also will raise the public awareness about the problem and will promote in its prevention and for a preference to more responsible and careful life style and prevention of progression of disease at all levels and circumsctances

Again, to emphasize on and to point out the good values of human nature, you see; you have done a good job in raising a question and the yahoo personnel in projecting it on the internet and increasing the awareness of the problem.

black, jews, fat , bald, stupid people are all discriminated against and probably a thousand other types of people,,,,,,,,some have done nothing but having been born........
hiv is iust one of many groups and they can spread it and you might die....................
stop the stigma against the rest and maybe hiv will be non discriminated against.........

jackie , u know all . but i wd like to tell some measures:

make them dependent by providing some jobs or by engaging in any type of commercial activities.

they should live in panic free enviroment.
though u r very brilliant and know very well still i have tried to give some measured to u.

thanks for asking such questions for the welfate of humanity.
i know u want to do lot of thingsfor the welfare of society.

Many experts feel that it鈥檚 time we moved beyond HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns and began seriously tackling the practical considerations of getting medicines to patients. Awareness is important, but it鈥檚 useless if we cannot provide the medicines.

only by awareness....

Are you really Jackie Shroff? I Dont believe.

I can also say I m Tiger your kid.

Good that you have put up the question in a public place as this. The sole answer to your question is social awareness, and that too, implemented in proper and effective ways. Since India is a country where there still exists illiteracy and unawareness in the major part of its population, people need to be more knowledgeable of facts and truths, than old stereotype views on certain things, including HIV/AIDS. It depends on our government and the people concerned, to chalk out in what way the larger part of the people's mentality will be truly affected; and to then go about it as effectively. Some small, but to some extent, significant steps that could be taken are, instilling anti-discrimination ideas into the minds of school students, holding interactive workshops where students as well as teachers and guardians can get together, holding proper and effective campaigns in the more rural parts of the country, state or city, etc. Even common school-going children of this generation, like me and millions out there in India who are going to English-medium schools and receiving quality education in all terms, can do their bit as responsible citizens of India. For them and their guardians alike, to get interested and feel duteous towards these issues, is important.
Thus, social awareness, proper and clearly effective, can help mould public public opinion and views, as result of which, the Indian public could be more duteous and empathetic towards the victims of HIV/AIDS.

1.By changing attitude of people towards sex and sexual relations.
2. Right information about its treatment ( though not curable but still can be kept under check with modern medicines)
3 Sex Education

Get your vaccination.

hospitalize him/her!

PKPundit has given a very; sound, elaborate, practical and correct answer.

To add a cent, to that besides education; character building is very important not only to acquire decent education but also to use it effectively and usefully and to develop a good ethical and social discipline.

It is education and especially character building that ensures the people to live up to their good education and decent habits they have acquired.

After all the major difference between the human race and all other life on the planet is a matter of brain and its proper and constructive use for education rich in constructive and decent values and character building for acquiring decent values and using them in day to day life for ones own benefit and that of the society and the planet/universe

pkpundit has given very good answer

People living with AIDS have all the rights that a normal human being has.
Right to freedom
Right to education
Right to express his feelings
Right towards public facilities all other rights that a normal human being enjoys.

People should be made aware about this.

It is very simple, treat them the way you treat your own kith and kin. Very easy to write a little difficult to do, but mind you not impossible.

hi
it is a very relevant question which we normally face in daily life. The stigma with the people living with HIV/AIDS is due to the social structure of our society to remove this strigma and discrimination we need to have community meeting with the P.L.W.A. and motivate comman people about HIV/AIDS awareness more over we should organise some programs and workshops as mass events where we should distribute I.E.C. material to make the people aware and get together programes with the community.

Playing a positive roll in your movies in future encouraging peoples to extend the helping hand instead of leaving them helpless.

while talking abt AIDS/ HIV and geveing them equally imp wht they desireved .

i think only thing is require awareness and only awareness. I am well educated this time i am in metro city but i am sorry to myself because i know this decease only that point how much presented by our DOORDHASAN.
i.e. AIDS saath khane se nahi hota...baat karne se nahi hota......MOST OF THE time everyone is working for their job rest time for Reality shows and for family but we dont know how should behave those persons.....definately i never try to know more......but it was media who make me know about cricket, condoms, films, entertainment....then why we are not focusing this....for this Q u r getting slow response because we also dont want to aware.....till we met this decease.........but we are at fault at self and at society level..we should think again.

talk with friendly not with sympathy

I think we just have to accept those people in our community. I do it. Being with them, accepting them as our friends isn't gonna make us the HIV/AIDS positive.

I also think we Indians are VERY strict about sex. I mean you hear that word somewhere and people will go wooooooooo!!!! We are always afraid that someone might know our secret that isn't actually a secret. At the end we end up in this sort of conditions.

As for the awareness, Media HAS to play the role of a teacher.

Dude are you really Jackie Shroff? Meine sunela aap movie mein to logo bahoot dhote ho lekin bachpan mein bahoot mar khayele ho, right?

There are various methods and as a public health expert I can direct you to several websites. However, some of the non governmental organizations under UN exchange seem to be doing good work. I have international experience in this area and want to help. Pls. contact me directly to discuss this heartfelt issue for our communities. My email is nicolesmith@inumsoft.com. Good luck!

Make them fell that living with AIDS is just like living with Diabetics. Need to be always health conscious as diabetics people do and live to the fullest of life.

Eventhough medicines are important for them ,their heart and mind should be very confident enough to face this world without shy and fear...this is not a dangerous disease when compared to jealousy which is a slow poison for a person who is having such a quality........so they should feel free to overcome all the difficulties without discriminating themselves

make prayer for all of them. give really love to them. create exitement about life into their heart. positiveness can cure any disease. if they may be hopfull, positive, faithfull to god and for it if we can help to them, i think by this we can do very good job for them. be +ve, but not with HIV. Save the humanity with +vity

it is very hard.because even if you do not have HIV it is very uncomfortable to talk about it.i feel for people who have HIV/AIDS .all we can do is just act normal some people try to over react try to give them more symphaty.i think over reacting make them more uncomfortable.as far as discrimination is concerned you just cannot change it.this disease is such an inocent mistake.i hope one day we get a cure of HIV/AIDS and help millions of people.only for you JACKIE man i answered this question.GOD BLESS

Its very easy first we saw the people who affected by the HIV
like our child .why, because our children's who ever doing any great ,or dangerous things we should not notice that thing . As like we does not notice they are affected by the HIV and we give support to them for their life and for their family
thanking you

Educate people. It is the total and utter ignorance about HIV/AIDS that is the main (if not THE ONLY) reason for peoples' prejudices and cause for discrimination towards fellow humans suffering from HIV/AIDS. There are, even, these so-called educated people who believe that they might get "contaminated" (what a horrible word !) by touching or even being anywhere near a an HIV/AIDS patient ! Can you believe that ? Show them love and......I was going to say
"compassion" but they do not need that -- they just want you to treat them as normal humanbeings which, for goodness sake, they ARE !! Get rid of your prejudices and ignorance and treat them as you yourself want to be treated.

Sir...Its a privalage for me to answer your beautiful question...

Firstly let me tell you that i had been watching your movies since my childhood and i liked RANGEELA a lot!!
Hope this world could be as colourful as Rangeela!!

Coming to the answer...

PEOPLE WITH HIV/AIDS :HIV/AIDS continues to carry stigma and people fear discrimination. Its feels really bad to see people suffer with such disease. They feel more pain when people don't talk to them or be far away to them. They feel guilty about themselfs and finally die maily due to lack of support ,love, effection from others. The main problem here is the lack of education. The question here is that "ARE THEY REALLY UNTOUCHABLES" "DO WE GET THAT DEADLY VIRUS BY TOUCHING HIV/AIDS INFECTED PEOPLE?
Now a days there are many medicines available in govt hospitals for free, people affected with AIDS are able to live a complete and normal life through these medicines. There are many diseases in this world but why people fear only AIDS..Mainly because lack of education.

ITS NOT HOW MANY YEARS WE LIVE,ITS HOW WE LIVE!!
The realization of happiness happens only after experience of pain.
If we desire to blossom like a flower in the garden of life,
Then we must learn the art of adjusting our life with the thorns.
Firstly we should make them feel better by making ourselfs part of their live and caring them,we have to tell them that they can live a normal life like others by using medicines properly and eating healthy food.
Hope there will be a cure for this disease..
HOPE!!!

enjoy this song :)

jaggu dada,i just want to say that its not only the responsibility of the celebreties but the common man must also make efforts to impart the hiv/aids education to each other.this helps ,but not to the extent where a celebrety comes on the tv screen and does the same.because people loves them and few idolises too..so they are tend to believe their famous people.
but do you think is it happening really?i mean we can only see few actors coming on tv and impating hiv/aids messages that too only on the "worlds aids prevention day",whereas we can see countless actors,cricketers....endorsing thousands of commercial products on a daily basis.why cant they hold on to their own selfishness and think about such an serious issue as u did now by asking this que to common man?
infact you are one of the established and famous actors, kindly take a strict step towards it .
on behalf of all,i thank you that you are atleast concerned about this issue.

You can make themselves feel they are among and like us. By giving the same facilities like normal people have.
You should behave with them normally.

by treating them like normal human beings, seeing themselves as you see yourself.

Give love, Get love, Spread love.
