How do they work out that partcular people are unaware living with HIV, how do they know this?

If ppl themselves are unaware then how do the stats know this? or whoever states this, if someone particular doesn't know they have HIV/AIDS they how does anyone esle know, when they say this percent are unknowingly diagnosed with HIV/AIDS how they do they know this?.

Good question, and one I get often when I use the statistic:

up to 30% of people in North America with HIV are unaware of their infection

- we are able to look at the number of positive test results given out (and adjust them for underreporting and multiple testers

-we are able to look at the number of people who have died (and adjust for underreporting etc)

-from those two figures we can get the number of people who are currently DIAGNOSED and living with HIV (including AIDS)

- researchers/statisticians from both Canada and the US (gov't and non-gov't) have shown that when each country used modelling to estimate the actual number of cases of HIV (whether diagnosed or not) and then subtracted that number from the total number of people LIVING with diagnosed HIV infection it worked out similarly. There are rules to use when figuring this out that are beyond my 2nd year stats course at university! So, if you need more info about this sort of thing, I would contact a statistician

maybe they get told one day that they do..and probaley come to a conclusion of the person who might have infected them and count back the weeks?..
